CONCURRENT SESSIONS

BUILDING A MORE INCLUSIVE LEADER: Tales from the Resistance
Hosted by Toyota
Sadly, you can’t hire your way into a more diverse workforce. At some point, people who are very different from each other are going to have to feel safe enough to get work done together. Yet traditional talent development continues to focus on majority culture fit rather than on inclusive leadership skills. At best, piecemeal efforts—like a la carte anti-bias and diversity training—do very little. And when these efforts don’t work, they alienate and insult white (or majority culture) employees. While inclusive leadership sounds like an unalloyed virtue to many, it remains a risky new idea for plenty of good people, and longtime leaders can interpret the new diversity happening around them as an existential threat. A candid discussion about how to help people confront their fears, push past their own resistance, and embrace a new status quo.
