Join us! On 16 September 2019, Fortune’s Most Powerful Women International will bring together female leadership from all industries to share views and discuss global challenges and opportunities. Director of Live Media Content and Co-chair of MPW International Fortune Maithreyi Seetharaman asks Nubank Co-founder Cristina Junqueira her thoughts on business and why taking the time to collaborate and exchange with female peers is important.
MS: What does the future of technology in Latin America look like and how is it a game-changer for its people?
CJ: There’s so much room to create new businesses and services to make people’s lives easier in Latin America. Technology will continue to enable the rise of new and disruptive business models in several sectors, similarly to Nubank’s rise in financial services. Smartphone penetration is already high and continues to grow, including more and more people in this new economy. Additionally, as more venture capital funding continues to flow into the region, competition in all sectors should increase, further benefiting hundreds of millions of people.
MS: What about the future of Brazil excites and worries you most, over the next decade?
CJ: I am very bullish about Brazil and the country’s tech ecosystem development. Nubank has shown that Brazilians are ready for digital alternatives that are more efficient and offer a much better customer experience. There are always risks when it comes to emerging markets, but the fundamentals of a large, young, connected population that is eager for new products and services that can enhance their lives won’t change.
MS: How has “Leading Together” influenced your personal and professional life and how can the global community help bridge differences and create understanding?
CJ: I view “Leading Together” as a series of skills and principles such as effective collaboration, emotional intelligence, and inclusion that were instrumental to both my personal and professional development. My journey in developing these abilities has shaped the way I lead and helped me find the best way to bring a lot of diversity to Nubank. We deeply believe building strong and diverse teams is key to keeping our competitive edge. Thus, Nubank is currently a workforce of more than 40% of women, roughly 30% of people that identify as LGBTQ+, over 25 nationalities, all of which is unheard of for financial services or tech companies.
